The Valdermoor Institute was established in 1847 by a consortium of six Swiss banking families — Hauvermann, Dreyfuss-Lorenz, Aldric, Von Stael, Wirth-Kessler, and Grunfeld — who sought an institution worthy of their heirs. Not merely an academy of learning, but a crucible of continuity. A place where the architecture of Europe's financial order could be reproduced, generation after generation, with precision.


Valdermoor does not chase modernity. It does not pursue rankings. It does not need to. Its graduates occupy the boards and vaults of the continent not because of what they studied, but because of who they studied beside.

The oldest and most attended faculty. Teaches not the mechanics of wealth, but the philosophy of its perpetuation. Endowments, trusts, inheritance law, and the art of invisibility.

Statecraft & Institutional Power

Educates those who will sit in rooms where decisions are made without public record. Alumni hold positions across the IMF, BIS, and nine Central Banks.

Private international law, treaty interpretation, and the architecture of contracts that bind nations. The quietest faculty. The most consequential.

The Order of the Institute

Valdermoor maintains no official social ranking. It does not need to. The hierarchy organises itself, as it always has, according to the oldest principle known to the human animal: those who have, hold.

Tier I — The Ancestral
Legacy Heirs

Descendants of the six founding families. They do not apply to Valdermoor. They are expected. Their rooms are pre-assigned. Their names appear in the founding charter, still displayed in the Hauvermann Hall.

Tier II — The Established
Dynastic Admissions

Families of sufficient standing — three generations of measurable capital or political station. Welcomed fully. Capable of marrying into Tier I. The majority of the student body.

Tier III — The Affiliated
Invited Associates

New money, ministerial appointments, or internationally connected families without European pedigree. Present but probationary. Respected in lecture halls. Not always in drawing rooms.

Tier IV — The Beneficiaries
Scholarship Students

Admitted on academic merit via the Valdermoor Foundation Grant. Tolerated. Featured in prospectuses as evidence of the Institute's grace. Addressed formally. Never invited informally. They know what they are here.

Former Chairman, European Central Bank Advisory Council. Architect of the 1992 Maastricht supplemental fiscal accords. Currently unpublished.

Casimir Dreyfuss-Lorenz

Valdermoor Foundation Scholar. Now Senior Economist, IMF. The most decorated Beneficiary graduate in thirty years. Valdermoor has not yet decided what to make of her.

Entry to Valdermoor

Valdermoor does not recruit. It extends consideration. The process differs significantly depending on the nature of one's candidacy.

Standard Admissions — Legacy & Dynastic

Candidates from qualifying families submit a Letter of Consideration, accompanied by the Valdermoor Family Register confirmation and two letters from current faculty patrons. Interviews are conducted privately, in person, in Zurich. Academic transcripts are reviewed as a formality. Acceptance rates for qualifying families have historically exceeded 88%.


Affiliated International Admissions

Open to families of established international standing. Full academic portfolio required. A formal dinner with the Admissions Council precedes any decision. The Institute reserves the right to decline without stated reason.

The Valdermoor Foundation Grant — Beneficiary Admissions

In 1923, the Valdermoor Institute established the Foundation Grant as a gesture of institutional philanthropy. Each year, between eight and twelve exceptional students from non-qualifying backgrounds are offered full tuition coverage and accommodation within the Institute's secondary residential wing.


Beneficiary students are full academic members of the Institute. They attend all lectures, access all libraries, and graduate with the full Valdermoor credential. They are encouraged to excel. Their presence, the Institute believes, enriches the academic environment for all.


Social integration is, as with all things at Valdermoor, a matter of individual circumstance and mutual discretion.
